What is Automated Vehicle Technology

We live in a world of technological wonders. We have robotic vacuum cleaners, phones with access to more information than the largest university libraries, and even smart self-adjusting thermostats. While fully autonomous vehicles are still a ways off, there are plenty of automated vehicle technologies available that make driving easier and safer than ever before. These technologies are often available on most high-end state-of-the-art vehicles, though there are some options that are available for installation after your car leaves the factory.

  • Active parking systems: Sliding your car into tight parking places is less of a hassle with active parking assist systems. Available on many vehicle models, active parking systems use radar to scan for potential parking spaces while calculating distances and needed maneuvers for parking successfully. This can be especially useful for parallel parking as the system literally steers you through the process with indicators for when to brake, accelerate, and shift gears.
  • Adaptive cruise control: When driving at high speeds, it is especially important for drivers to be alert to traffic conditions, including the speed of vehicles in front of them. Adaptive cruise control takes some of the burden off the driver by monitoring the speeds of vehicles ahead and adjusting your speed to maintain a predetermined distance. Speeds and distances are set in advance by the driver. The driver still bears the responsibility of being alert to the road, and adaptive cruise control systems can be overridden at any time.
  • Automatic braking: Using radar, cameras, laser sensors, or a combination of any of these, some vehicle systems will scan the road and apply the brakes when a collision is imminent. Depending on the system, they will prepare the brakes in advance so that the right amount of brake pressure will be applied in the event of an emergency. This reduces the impact human error has on reacting to accidents.
  • Active lane keeping assist: Drifting in the lane is often a result of drowsy driving or inexperience. In order to compensate for this, some vehicles have active lane keeping assist systems in place to warn to driver when lane departure is about to occur. Using a camera to watch lane markings, the system (such as that on Safe Drive Systems’ RD-140 system) will give the driver auditory and visual warnings if the vehicle starts to drift in the lane.
  • Radar warning system: By monitoring the road ahead with radar and other technologies, warning systems such as Safe Drive Systems’ RD-140 Radar scan the road ahead of the driver and give advance warning if the situation starts to get dangerous. The system will function in any weather and will detect cars, motorcycles, and even bicycles.

While none of these technologies make driving a fully automated process, they do make it easier to drive safely.
